METU Cyprus Supports the Campaign to Produce Protective Face Shields

As the pandemic becomes more widespread across the world and creates significant knock-on effects on the daily life of individuals, the top priority of METU Northern Cyprus Campus remains the health, safety and wellbeing of its students and the society. With this in mind, all units of the Campus take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of new coronavirus infection.

METU Northern Cyprus strives to maintain METU culture in Cyprus and, by tradition, attaches importance to contributing to the society where it operates and to raising environmentally aware individuals. Based on these principles, METU NCC students and faculty members started to produce protective face shields for the project initiated by the solidarity group "Cypriot Friends" and the TRNC Ministry of Health. The campaign aims to support hospitals in Northern Cyprus.

A face shield produced by 3D printers consists of two plastic components; a handband and a visor. The production on the Campus is conducted by four Mechanical Engineering assistants (Ahmed Zarrar, Barış Ördek, Matthew Araz and Syed Meesam Reza) under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Volkan Esat, Advisor to the President. A maximum of 10 face shields are produced per day using the two 3D printers which are available for use. The first batch, which includes 22 3D printed face shields  produced in four days, was delivered to the campaign committee for distribution to healthcare workers.
