DIRECTIVE FOR UNDERGRADUATE MINOR PROGRAMS
AIM
Article 1
The aim of the
undergraduate minor program is to allow academically successful students to
become knowledgeable in another subject that they are interested in.
ESTABLISHING
A MINOR PROGRAM
Article 2
A minor program is
specified upon the recommendation of the related Academic Commiteee and The
Campus Rectorate with the approval of the University Senate and is maintained
and coordinated by the Campus Rectorate. A minor program consists of a minimum
of 18 credits.
APPLICATION,
ACCEPTANCE AND REGISTRATION FOR MINOR PROGRAMS
Article 3
- Student
quotas for minor programs is determined by the Campus Rectorate and is
announced at the beginning of each semester.
- Applications
to a minor program are made to the Registrar's Office by submitting a
formal request and a transcript receipt prior to the deadline specified by
the University Senate.
- To
be eligible for a minor program, a student's cumulative grade point
average must be at least 2.50.
- Students
may apply to a minor program no earlier than the third and no later than
the sixth semester of their major program.
- The
applications that meet the specified criteria are proceeded by the
Registrar’s Office.
- Acceptance
is subject to the proposal of the Academic Commitee and approval of the Campus
President.
- A
student cannot register at the same time to more than one minor program.
ASSISTANCE
Article 4
In order to assist
students in selecting and planning the courses for their minor program, Minor
Program Coordnators will be appointed who will be responsible for ensuring that
the program is carried out in a suitable manner. It is also this coordinator's
duty to maintain contact with each student's major program
advisor.
PREREQUISITE
COURSES
Article 5
The students
enrolled in a minor program must have taken the prerequisites for the courses
in the program. If the prerequisite courses have not been taken before in the
major program, the minor program is followed with the condition that the grades
will not be added to the point average (NI status) and the minor program
appears on the transcript.
MAJOR AND
MINOR PROGRAM
Article 6
The success or
graduation of a student in his major program should in no way be affected by
his / her status in the minor program. Separate grade reports and transcripts
are issued.
Those courses
required for both programs will appear on both transcripts but these courses
are accepted as one course while calculating the course load. In the event that
a student withdraws from a course counted for both programs, the withdrawal
will be recorded on both programs. A student is not allowed to withdraw in the
event that the total number of courses taken in the major and the minor
programs is reduced by 2/3 of the course load in the major program.
In order for the
students registered in a minor program to complete these programs, the students
must take not less than 4 courses with not less than 12 credits that are in the
program of the related minor program and are offered by the department which
offers the concerned program. These courses should not be the courses that are
taken for both the major and the minor programs and/or are counted in both
programs.
COURSE LOAD
Article 7
- The
students of the minor programs with cumulative grade point average between
2.00 and 2.49 in the major program can take in one semester in the major
and the minor programs up to 3 more courses with credits than the total
number of courses they can take in their major programs.
- The
students of the minor programs with cumulative grade point average of 2.50
and above in the major program can take in one semester in the major and
the minor programs up to 4 more courses with credits than the total number
of courses they can take in their major programs.
SUCCESS AND
GRADUATION
Article 8
- Any
student whose cumulative grade point average is at least 2.00 is
considered to be successful and any student whose cumulative grade point
average falls below 2.00 is considered to be unsuccessful.
- For
the students who are registered in a minor program, there is no success
rank order.
- A
student who is eligible for graduation in a major course and has completed
a minor program with a grade point average of 2.00 will receive a minor
program certificate.
- A
student who is eligible for graduation in a major course but has not
completed the minor program can be allotted at most one extra semester to
complete the program. This time can be extended by the related Academic Committee
decision. A student who graduates from a major program will receive a
diploma from the concerned department at the end of the final semester.
For the whole of the extended period, the student will continue to pay the
tuition required by the department of the minor program, based on the
total number of semesters spent in the undergraduate program. If the
student enrolls in a graduate program, the tuition for graduate school
will be paid as well. The Faculty that offers the minor program is
responsible for making decisions regarding its students.
- A
student who completes a minor program is not entitled to the same rights
and privileges as the graduate of the major program.
TEMPORARY
OR PERMANENT LEAVE, DISMISSAL FROM A MINOR PROGRAM
Article 9
- A
student can request to be dropped from a minor program .
- The
students who are registered in a minor program can apply to other minor
programs provided that they meet the application criteria and can register in a
new program provided that they leave the previous program.
- A
student who is given leave from his major program will automatically be
given the same status in his minor program. In the event that a student is
prevented from taking a course because it is not offered or conflicts with
another, the student can be given a one semester leave from the minor
program with the approval of the concerned Academic Commitee.
- Any
student who neglects to take suitable courses for two consecutive
semesters without official leave will be dismissed from the minor program.
- Any
student whose cumulative grade point average in the major program falls
below 2.00 will not be permitted to take courses in the minor program the
following semester.
- Any
student whose cumulative grade point average in the minor program falls
below 2.00 for two consecutive semesters will be dismissed from the minor
program.
- A
student who drops out of a minor program will not be required to repeat
the minor program courses he was unsuccessful in.

Article 10
This document
refers to the Minor Program Directive , accepted by the University Senate on May,30th 2006 and has been valid since
that date.
