Civil Engineering Seminar at METU NCC
A seminar has been co-organized by the Chamber of Civil Engineers of KTMMOB (Union of the Chambers of Cyprus Turkish Engineers and
Architects) and METU Northern Cyprus Campus in 7-8 May 2009. The objectives of the seminar entitled Structural and Earthquake Engineering are to fulfill the
need of civil engineers after graduation such that they can follow the scientific and professional advances in the world and improve their background on
theoretical and practical subjects. In this seminar series, special emphasis was given to new scientific approaches developed in our country and in the world in
response to weak performance of structures observed after the earthquakes that took place in the last decade. This event was organized in three parts. On the
first day, design and seismic response of reinforced concrete and steel structures were undertaken. Principles of earthquake resistant design and basic concepts
of reinforced concrete structures were discussed in detail. Space truss structures that face problems during construction and earthquake resistant design of
steel structures were also presented. On the second day of the seminar, the most important topics of earthquake engineering were covered in a wide spectrum.
Seismic hazard analysis based on recently developed scientific methods and seismic hazard maps of North Cyprus obtained using these approaches were presented.
Performance based earthquake engineering, which has become one of the most popular topics of earthquake engineering in recent years, was covered in addition to
seismic assessment of existing structures and strengthening of reinforced concrete buildings. Assessment and strengthening parts of the Turkish Earthquake Code
that has been revised in 2007 to incorporate recent developments in earthquake engineering were presented.
