15th International Biomedical Science and Technology Symposium
15th Biomedical Science and Technology Symposium (BIOMED 2009) took place at METU Northern
Cyprus
Campus
from August 16 to August 19, 2009 attracting around 150 participants from about 20 countries ranging from the USA to China (Taiwan). Among the participants were renowned
international researchers, including the President of the European Society for Biomaterials as well as talented young researchers. During the symposium, 51 speeches and 74
poster sessions were performed, and sightseeing tours within the TRNC were held in order to introduce the beauties of our country to international Biomaterials and Tissue
Engineering researchers.
Organized by Asst. Prof. Dr. Erdal Onurhan, Secretary General of METU Northern Cyprus Campus, and Dr.
Vasıf Hasırcı, from METU Ankara Campus, the symposium was hosted by distinguished institutions of the field including the Turkish Society for Biomaterials and Tissue
Engineering and the European Society for Biomaterials. The opening speech of the symposium was delivered by Hamza Ersan Saner, the TRNC Minister of Tourism, Environment and
Culture, and its local sponsors include the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Deniz Plaza, and Korman Construction.
Mainly focusing on biomaterials, which is a field aimed at effecting significant improvements in the
field of medicine, the symposium provided an active platform where implants, artificial organs, and advances in biotechnology and nanotechnology were discussed. The highest
Turkish and foreign participation to BIOMEDs, which celebrated their 15th anniversary, was also achieved in this symposium.
